Failure to arrest Zobayer’s killers in Chilmari protested

Even after a year has passed since the murder of brilliant student and organizer of the July Movement, Zobayer, his comrades, friends, and relatives have taken to the streets to block roads in protest over the failure to arrest the accused.
At that time, severe traffic congestion on both sides of the road caused suffering for the public.
Although a year has passed since the murder of his son and the case is still under investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Rangpur, they have yet to arrest any of the listed accused. However, PBI claims that efforts to arrest the accused are ongoing.
Even after a long time, the administration has failed to arrest the named accused. Questions have arisen among the locals and family members regarding the role of the administration in ensuring justice for the son's murder and arresting the culprits.
On Tuesday (29 July) at around 11:00 AM, a human chain was held for about two hours by blocking traffic on the Chilmarī-Horipur road in front of the Upazila Parishad premises.
Abdul Jalil, father of the deceased Zobayer Amin, said, “I have held press briefings, written to various newspapers, and organized human chains seeking justice for my son’s murder. Just arrest one accused. It has been nine months since I submitted the case to PBI, and I humbly asked: just arrest one accused — not in seven days, not even three — within three hours it will be revealed who and why they killed my son. I am still humbly requesting that the accused be arrested and brought under the law quickly.”
On the other hand, Zobayer’s mother, Morjina Begum, said, “My son was called from home at night and murdered in a planned way. Those who emptied my heart — I want justice for them.”
Speakers at the human chain said, “Even after all this time, not a single accused in the murder case has been arrested? We organized a human chain with the same demand a few days ago, and again we are here. Zobayer Amin was murdered in a planned way. Afterwards, the accused staged a false drama. Therefore, if the accused are not arrested soon, the movement will intensify.”
Inspector Abu Sayem of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Rangpur said, “The case is under investigation; we still haven’t received the final postmortem report, maybe we will. The accused is not in the area, but we are trying.”
It is to be mentioned that on July 19 last year, college student Zobayer Hossain Amin went missing after allegedly falling into the Brahmaputra River. His decomposed body floated up the next day. After recovering the mutilated body, the family filed a murder case. On July 21 of that year, a case was registered at Chilmarī Model Police Station against Md. Sainan Swachchha (21), Md. Yousuf Ahmed Zayed (21), and six to seven unidentified individuals.
