A vibrant traditional sports festival was held in Bandarban on the occasion of Sangrai, the traditional New Year celebration of the Marma community.
The event was held at the Rajar Math (King’s Ground) in the district town on Tuesday afternoon drawing large crowds of locals and tourists alike.
The festival was inaugurated by Region Commander Brigadier General S.M. Rakib Ibne Rezwan, who attended the event as the chief guest. Among others present were Zone Commander A.S.M. Mahmudul Hasan, Additional Superintendent of Police Abdul Karim, and several senior administrative officials.
As part of the third day of the Sangrai festivities, the traditional sports festival featured indigenous games such as Boli Khela (traditional wrestling), climbing a greased bamboo pole, tug of war involving young women, pillow fights, and other rural games that reflect the cultural heritage of the region.
Marma youth—both male and female—from different villages across the district actively participated in the competitions. Thousands of spectators gathered at the Rajar Math to enjoy the lively festivities. Tourists from distant places also joined in, experiencing the rich traditions of the Marma community firsthand.
The entire hill district of Bandarban has taken on a festive atmosphere, turning into a city of celebration centered around the Marma New Year.
At the end of the event, prizes were distributed among the winners of the various games by the guests.
It is mentioned that the Sangrai Festival officially began on April 13 with a grand procession and will continue until April 18. From April 16 to 18, every afternoon will feature the traditional "Moitree Pani Boroson" (Water Festival), a symbol of friendship and renewal, where Marma youth will participate in playful water splashing.
