Dohar (Dhaka) Correspondent
As part of efforts to eradicate the dengue outbreak, a canal cleaning program was inaugurated in Dohar Upazila of Dhaka under the initiative of the municipality, along with an awareness campaign conducted with the support of BRAC.
On Wednesday morning, Dohar UNO and Municipal Administrator Tania Tabassum inaugurated the canal cleaning and sanitation program in the Nikra area.
During the event, she said, Nikra canal in Dohar municipality has become clogged, obstructing its main flow. As a result, the canal has been suffocating due to long-accumulated waste and water hyacinth. She added that cleaning and restoring this massive canal is a challenging task for the municipality alone, emphasizing that there is no alternative to collective social and voluntary efforts.
Dohar Municipality’s Executive Engineer M.M. Mamunur Rashid said that due to waterlogging, the flow of canals is hindered by accumulated waste, preventing water from reaching the river. This causes waterlogging.
As part of addressing waterlogging, a campaign to remove waste and debris from the canal’s mouth has been initiated. As part of BRAC’s cleaning campaign, this program was conducted to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases, dengue, and chikungunya, and to reduce the infection rate.
Present at the event were Dohar Municipality Executive Officer Md. Kamal Hossain, BRAC’s Climate Change and Health Project Dohar Branch Program Officer Milan Chandra Mohanta, Savar Branch Officer Md. Somer Ali, BNP leader Nurul Islam Bepari, along with officials from Dohar Upazila and Municipality.
