ACC raid on Kurigram food warehouse : Misappropriation of 521MTs of paddy, 35 MTs of rice alleged

Kurigram Correspondent

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted a raid at the district food warehouse in Kurigram and found major irregularities in the stock of paddy and rice.

An ACC official inspected eight godowns of the district food warehouse in the new railway station area of the district town on Sunday and complained that 521 metric tons of paddy and 35 metric tons of rice were not received.

ACC sources said that the operation was conducted on the instructions of the Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters based on allegations of collecting low-quality rice from traders instead of farmers, using old sacks instead of new ones, and embezzling money by selling rice elsewhere.

District Corruption Eradication Commission Assistant Director Md. Sabdarur Islam said that the godowns where paddy and rice were deficient have been sealed. When asked about the shortage, the food godown officials could not give any satisfactory answers, so the ACC official said that further steps will be taken. He also said that unfit rice has also been seized.

However, it was not possible to contact District Food Controller Mohammad Kazi Hamidul Haque on this matter despite multiple phone calls.
