A sustainable state cannot be built by weakening people : Tarique Rahman

Mehedi Shaon, Ashulia (Savar)

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has stated that a sustainable state, politics, government, or reform is not possible by weakening the people.

Speaking virtually  on Wednesday at a protest rally titled "July Uprising 2024 – Remembering the Horrific July" held near the infamous mass cremation site adjacent to Ashulia Police Station, he made these remarks.

The rally was organized by the Dhaka District BNP with participation from students, workers, and the general public.

Tarique Rahman said, “The people ousted fascism and entrusted an interim government with the responsibility of running the state. However, a faction within that government is now attempting to reinstate fascist forces through deceitful tactics. This could put the path to democratic progress in jeopardy.”

Issuing a strong warning, he said, “The progress gained through the blood of martyrs must not be destroyed by misguided decisions.”

He added, “The true strength of politics and the state lies in the people. Without empowering them, no sustainable system of governance can emerge. The BNP envisions a strong and accountable state where the people are the sole source of power.”

Tarique Rahman also announced that, if given the responsibility to govern, the BNP will construct a permanent memorial in Savar-Ashulia to honor the martyred working-class people.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that political parties must not hinder democracy but should instead ensure a free and fair election. He warned against allowing any opportunity for the return of fascist forces.

BNP Standing Committee Member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy remarked, “Though fascism has been overthrown, the country is now being run under the guise of NGO politics.” He urged the leadership to provide clear direction for overcoming this new challenge.

Other speakers at the event included Dhaka District BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq, General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Amanullah Aman, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Dewan Mohammad Salauddin Babu, and Aminul Haque, among others. Members of the families of the martyrs also spoke during the rally.
