The United States on Satutday marked its historic 250th Independence Day, celebrating a quarter-millennium of self-determination, liberty, and democratic governance. The milestone, heavily promoted under the global "Freedom 250" initiative, resonated far beyond American borders, taking center stage right here in Bangladesh.
To mark the seminal occasion, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka launched "America Week 2026", a dynamic seven-day, multi-city cultural roadshow spanning Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Rajshahi. The celebrations brought a slice of American history and culture directly to local communities, punctuated by performances from the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division Brass Band, open-air American Fairs, and museum exhibits.
Talking to journalists and dignitaries during his visit to the "American Fair" at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan, Dhaka, U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen highlighted the profound global footprint of America's founding ideals and expressed deep optimism for bilateral relations.
Today is our real birthday. It’s exciting to be here, and we’re having great celebrations across Bangladesh. We believe the story of America has inspired many across the world, including many here in Bangladesh, he added.
In a comprehensive formal address detailing the evolution of U.S.-Bangladesh ties, Ambassador Christensen reflected on the historical weight of the day and pointed directly to modern diplomatic successes, including the recently signed U.S.-Bangladesh Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART). The milestone treaty slashes tariffs from 37 percent to a competitive 19 percent, paving the way for a highly balanced economic partnership.
"As America celebrates our 250th birthday, we do so with deep gratitude for our friends across the world, including the people of Bangladesh," Christensen noted, adding that both nations are pursuing sovereign policies that mutually benefit their citizens
The Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) celebrations across Bangladesh are designed to move beyond traditional closed-door diplomatic receptions to foster authentic, widespread public engagement. Highlights of the ongoing events include. American Fair (Dhaka): Hosted at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park, offering a public dive into American culture, food, and interactive history.,Freedom 250 Concerts: Showstopping collaborations featuring the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division Brass Band, including a signature performance scheduled at the South Plaza of the Bangladesh Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament) and the Founders Museum Exhibit (Sylhet): A dedicated exhibition tracing the early struggles for liberty and the concepts of individual rights.
The celebratory week runs from July 1 through July 7, reinforcing a bilateral relationship anchored in a shared vision for economic prosperity, public health integration, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
