The sea near Kuakata in Patuakhali has become rough under the influence of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. Winds continued to pick up as the rain continued to fall on the coast late Saturday evening. After that, it started raining on the coast from Sunday morning.
Unable to survive in the deep sea due to the waves, the fishermen started taking shelter in different parts of the coast. Thousands of fishing trawlers took shelter in the Shibbaria river adjacent to Alipur-Mahipur fish port till Sunday afternoon.
Yunuch Mia, fisherman of FB Tamanna trawler returning from the sea, said, "There were good fish in the sea at the end of last month. I went to the sea hoping to catch more fish. After four days of fishing, suddenly the sea became rough. So I came back to the ghat. I sold fish worth two and a half lakh taka. If the weather is good, I will go to the sea.
Ali Mia, the sailor of another Allahr Dan trawler, who took shelter in Shibbaria river, said, 'Each trawler sold at least 10-15 lakhs of hilsa at the end of August. At the beginning of this month, the fish are not seen much. After fishing in the sea for 4/5 days, our trawler was forced to return from the sea for safe shelter with fish worth 2-3 lakh taka.
Abdul Jalil Gharami, a businessman of Alipur fish port , said, "Most of the fishing trawlers have taken safe shelter in different rivers and rivers of the coast due to rough seas. The rest of the trawlers are expected to return to the wharf by evening.'
