Supreme Court to review death reference, appeals for Aug 21 grenade attack after recess

Staff Correspondent

The Supreme Court will hear the death reference and appeals for the Aug 21 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally after its upcoming recess, according to the prosecution.

The case proceedings will continue with the previous bench if available; otherwise, a new bench may require the hearing to start from the beginning, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said on Wednesday.

After the trial court had delivered its verdict in the case in 2018, and the matter is now under review by the High Court.

The court's recess began on Aug 8 and will end on Oct 17.

In 2023, former attorney general Amin Uddin said there were “only a few hundred pages of the paper book” left to read but the hearing has been delayed due to the senior judge receiving medical treatment in India.

The hearing was expected to conclude within 10-11 working days, he said at that time.

The trial court's decision and case documents were sent to the High Court the same year, now registered as a death reference case.

BNP-Jamaat coalition government's former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, former deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu, and 19 others received death sentences.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and 19 others were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Tarique, currently residing in the UK, is considered a fugitive and has been unable to appeal.

The Aug 21 commemoration passed quietly with the Awami League inactive following its ouster, although some supporters posted about the event on Facebook.
