Summer's first cyclone to be named 'Remal'

Online Desk

If the low pressure area brewing in the south west Bay of Bengal intensifies into this summer’s first cyclone, it will be called "Remal,” meaning sand, a name chosen by Oman.

The low pressure, according to the Indian Met Department today, will most likely move northeastward after forming into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24.

According to officials tracking the depression, there are chances that it will intensify into a cyclone. If it does transform into a cyclone, it will be the first cyclone of this pre-monsoon season. However, the IMD is yet to officially call it “Remal” as was agreed to by the member-countries of the World Met Council at its meeting in 2020.

Under the influence of the depression, the sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal from May 23 and over north Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards.

The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the central and south Bay of Bengal from May 23 and into north Bay of Bengal from May 24. The fishermen who are already out at sea have been asked to return by tomorrow.
