
Storm causes huge damage to crops, houses in Lalmonirhat

A severe storm accompanied by rain swept through Lalmonirhat, causing widespread damage.
The storm disrupted the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway, railway services, and electricity supply for 12 hours, plunging thousands of people across three upazilas into extreme hardship.
The storm, which began after 11:30 PM on Wednesday lasted only for 15 to 20 minutes but unleashed catastrophic destruction. Intermittent rain throughout the night further damaged over 500 semi-permanent and permanent houses and crops across Lalmonirhat district. Additionally, the storm ravaged corn, paddy, jute, mango, litchi, banana plantations, and vegetable fields.
Uprooted trees blocked the vital Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway and various rural roads, halting vehicular movement. With assistance from the fire service and locals, the debris was cleared, and traffic resumed by Thursday morning.

The Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) and Rural Electrification Board areas were affected as electric poles and wires were damaged, leaving people without access to drinking water, mobile phone charging, or nighttime lighting.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner HM Rakib Haider stated that the district administration has begun distributing dry food in affected areas.
