Smuggled coal, cosmetics shipment seized in Sylhet border

 Sylhet Bureau

On the border road in Sylhet, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a shipment of Indian coal and cosmetics at the Shashanghat border area during an operation to intercept smuggled goods being transported via road.

On Saturday, BGB’s 28 Border Guard Battalion from the Sylhet Sector, in separate operations conducted in the Mashimpur area of Bishwambharpur and the Narayantala area of Sadar Upazila in Sunamganj, confiscated smuggled coal and cosmetics worth approximately 39 lakh Taka.

On Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel AKM Zakaria Kadir, the commanding officer of BGB’s 28 Border Guard Battalion in Sunamganj, confirmed the information.

The BGB officer stated that the battalion’s patrol team seized a drum truck loaded with 22.5 metric tons of coal on its way to Sylhet, bypassing customs duties using the Bishwambharpur border road. The BGB suspects that the coal was smuggled from India via the waterways of the Jadukata River at the Laurogor border in Tahirpur, stored locally, and was then being transported by road to Sylhet for sale, evading BGB surveillance.

In another separate operation on Saturday, BGB patrol teams seized 543 pieces of various types of cosmetics from the Shashanghat border area of Sadar Upazila.

The total value of the seized coal, cosmetics, and the drum truck amounts to approximately 38 lakh 69 thousand Taka.
