Skyrocketing price : Vegetables now luxury commodities in Rangpur

Md. Mafiz Uddin Sarker, Rangpur

Vegetables have now become luxury products for the lower middle class people of Rangpur region. The price of all vegetables has skyrocketed. But the income did not increase. The middle class families are not able to break the debt or savings. In the meantime, due to the increase in the price of everyday products, it is difficult to run the family.

It has been seen visiting various markets including Lalbagh and City bazar in Rangpur that the prices of all daily commodities have been increased rapidly within a week. Apart from the prices of all things like rice, pulses, oil, potatoes, onions, vegetables, fish, meat, chicken and others have been out of touch. Within a week, the vegetable market has grown without limit Now the price of per kilogram Bitter Gourd has become 80 taka, Green Pepper 420 taka, Papaya 30-40 taka, Cabbage and big Eggplant 80 taka, small and long Eggplant 70 taka, Cowpea70 taka, Edible root 60 taka, medium sized Gourd 60 to 100 taka, Snake Gourd and Kakrol 70 taka, sweet pumpkin 50 to 60 taka and Green vegetable became 20 taka per bundle, However, the price of onion remains between 100-120 taka per kg.

Al-Amin, a small-time worker in Rangpur city said that most of the salary goes to house rent. With the extra that is in hand, the whole month is dragged on. As the price of fish and meat increased, most of the days of the week depended on vegetables and eggs. So, now vegetables have become a luxury item for him. While buying vegetables.

Titu of Chakbazar area of the city said in a tone of despair, "I am seeing darkness in my eyes. I don't know how to live with my family. I have reduced the expenditure in all sectors in the family, but still the tension burns. There is no condition to buy vegetables. Now when I hear about coming to the market, my mind is upset’'
In this regard, Khalil, a vegetable seller of the city's Lalbagh market said,” We used to buy vegetables for 30 taka, now we have to buy them for 50 taka.

We do not increase the price. As we have to buy at a higher price, so we have to sell at a higher price.” Traders in the city market said that due to the increase in the price of vegetables, customers are now buying less. Many are turning away after hearing the price. Because the price is high, people buy less. The supply of vegetables in the market is low, hence the price is high. But this time the price of vegetables has increased abnormally.

People are suffering a lot because the prices of daily commodities are unstable. So they said that the market price should be kept bearable by discussing with the traders. At the same time, the supervision of the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing is necessary to control the market of agricultural products.
