Six people, all linked to ruling party, killed in Narsingdi

Narsingdi Correspondent

Six people, including an upazila parishad chairman, were killed Sunday in Narsingdi sadar during a clash between anti-government protesters and ruling party’s men.

The ruling Awami League claimed that all the deceased were either the party’s activist or supporter and that they were beaten to death.

Four of those killed are members of Awami League and its affiliated bodies and one is a supporter. The identity of the sixth individual could not be independently confirmed.

According to locals, at 10am, Awami League leader and Narsingdi Sadar Upazila Chairman Anowar Hossain led about 2,000 ruling party activists to take position at the Madhabdi municipality bus stand near the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

They then moved to the playing field of Madhabdi Satiprasanna Institute.

Around 11am, protesters started moving towards Madhabdi bazar from the bus stand. Awami Leaguers tried to intercept the procession with gunshots, leaving six-seven general people injured.

The protesters regrouped and chased the Awami League men with sticks, forcing the ruling party activists to run towards the Madhabdi bazar.

As they tried to take shelter in a room, many, including those killed, got stuck in the middle of the bazar for unspecified reasons. At 1pm, the protesters reached there and beat the ruling party’s men to death.

The bodies were kept in front of the bazar mosque till 6pm.

Narsingdi Sadar Police Superintendent Shahidul Islam Shohag confirmed the deaths to reporters at 6pm, adding a team was being sent to recover the bodies.
