Schools to remain closed if temperature rises to 42 degrees

Staff Correspondent

Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel has announced that educational institutions may close again if temperatures reach 42 degrees Celsius, as schools and colleges reopen today following a seven-day closure prompted by a widespread heatwave.

Mohibul Hasan came up with the announcement while speaking to the journalists at the Dhaka Mohila Polytechnic Institute on Sunday afternoon.

"If the temperature in any district exceeds 42 degrees, the educational institutions of the respective area will be closed," he told the journalists.

Originally scheduled to reopen on 21 April after Eid-ul-Fitr and Bangla New Year holidays, schools and colleges were compelled to extend closures due to the persistent heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius in certain districts.

The recent peak temperature recorded was 42.7 degrees Celsius in Chuadanga, marking the highest of the summer season. Rajshahi and Pabna’s Ishwardi also experienced temperatures surpassing 42 degrees Celsius, while Dhaka reached a maximum of 38.2 degrees Celsius.
