The government is working to begin power generation at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant’s (RNPP) first unit in March next year to meet the country’s growing electricity demand, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed told reporters Friday.
The authorities would procure clearance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by March, and hopefully begin the country’s foray into nuclear power subsequently, the adviser said after attending a meeting with local government officials at the Pabna district administrator’s office.
Earlier in the day, he inspected the plant and found the safety measures “satisfactory,” he informed reporters.
The project is being implemented with up-to-date technologies, he assured.
The deadline has not been extended too much, and there are high prospects to secure reliefs on interest payments from the project financier Russia, Salehuddin noted.
Science and Technology Ministry Senior Secretary Md Mokabbir Hossain, Pabna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mofizul Islam, Pabna district Police Superintendent Mortoja Ali Khan were present at the meeting with finance adviser, among other government officials.
