Over 3 lakh sacrificial animals in Sylhet
Sylhet Bureau
In the Sylhet Division, there are more than three lakh sacrificial animals (cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep) available for this year’s Eid al-Adha.
For this year's Eid, the demand is for nearly 2.75 lakh animals. However, the number of sacrificial animals is considerably higher than the demand.
This information was provided by the officials of the Department of Livestock in Sylhet on Sunday.
According to the Department of Livestock in Sylhet, there is no risk of a shortage of sacrificial animals this year. Farmers have sufficient animals, and the number of household livestock is also not low. Additionally, every year, thousands of cattle are brought into Sylhet from various districts. As a result, there will be more cattle, goats, and sheep available in the market than the demand.
Sources further stated that many expatriates from Sylhet prefer to offer large cattle for sacrifice. Although the number of such cattle is low locally, large cattle from various districts, including Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Kushtia, are expected to arrive in Sylhet, as in previous years.
According to the information from the Division Livestock Office, a total of 3,09,000 sacrificial animals are ready in various farms across the four districts of the division. This includes 1,30,756 bulls, 32,368 oxen, 37,392 cows, 5,420 buffaloes, 77,646 goats, 24,014 sheep, and 919 other animals.
Dr. Maruf Hasan, Director of the Sylhet Division Livestock Office, mentioned, the initial estimate for sacrificial animal demand in the division is 2,71,500. It is expected that the demand may be slightly lower this year. In contrast, farmers have stockpiled 3,08,515 animals.
