One killed in clash at Kendua

One person was killed in a clash between two sides over a football match at Kendua in Netrakona.

At least 25 people, including a woman, were injured. The clash took place in Bishnupur village of Kandiura union of the upazila at around 7 pm on Saturday.

The deceased Abdul Qayyum (65) is a resident of Bishnupur village. According to the statement of local residents, there was a dispute between Abdul Latif and Mahabur Rahman Jhantu over the spread of dominance in Bishnupur village for two years. Several times the disputes between the two parties were settled in local arbitration. Among them, the boys of Mahabur Rahman Jhantur group went to play football on the fallow land next to the house on Saturday afternoon. At one point the ball went to the land of one of the Abdul Latif group. At one stage of the discussion between the two sides, people from both sides clashed with indigenous weapons.

In the clash, at least 25 people including Abul Qayyum of Mahabur Rahman Jhantu Group were seriously injured on both sides. Locals rescued the injured and sent them to Kendua Upazila Health Complex. As the condition of 14 persons including Abdul Qayyum deteriorated there, the doctor on duty referred them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Later, Abul Qayyum died on the way to Mymensingh hospital around 8:30 pm. Kendua police station officer-in-charge (OC) Enamul Haque (PPM) said that the body was recovered and taken to the police station. The body has been sent to Netrakona Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem. The police launched an operation to arrest those involved in the murder.
