No place for hegemony, misrule in Bangladesh, says Jamaat ameer

Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday said people will no longer accept hegemony and misrule in the country which prevailed during the fascist Awami League regime. “A political party hijacked the success of independence and established a one-party rule in the country. But the students defeated their misrule after 15 years and ushered in a new Bangladesh. The people of Bangladesh won’t accept hegemony and misrule anymore,” he said.

The Jamaat ameer was speaking at the opening session of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Member Conference-2024 at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. “In the past 15 and half years, the Awami League declared war against the people of Bangladesh. But the people, especially students and youth, didn’t accept any misrule as proven by the mass uprising of 2024,” he added.

Shafiqur Rahman further said the education system of Bangladesh was destroyed during the previous government’s tenure when the campuses were turned into arsenals to run extortion, grabbing and hegemony.

“The July uprising buried the system. There’ll be no place for extortionists, dominators and usurpers in Bangladesh anymore,” he added.

The conference was held with outgoing Shibir President Manjurul Islam in the chair while it was moderated by Secretary General Zahidul Islam.

During the inauguration, members of the families of the July uprising martyrs, including Abu Sayed, Faisal Mahmud Shanto, Wasim and Usman, and the family members of those were victims of enforced disappearance during the Awami League regime were present on the stage.

Meanwhile, Zahidul Islam and Nurul Islam were elected new president and secretary general of Shibir respectively.

During the closing session of the council, the names of the newly elected central committee members were announced by Chief Election Commissioner and former central President of the organisation Matiur Rahman Akand.

The session was conducted by Assistant Election Commissioner and former central President Selim Uddin. After the announcement, the chief election commissioner administered the oath to the newly elected president.

The voting for the central president of Shibir was held online simultaneously across the country from 7:00 pm on December 29 to 8:00 pm on December 30.

According to the organisation’s constitution, the central president, after consulting with the executive council, appointed Nurul Islam as the secretary general.
