In a shocking incident in Sunamganj's Jagannathpur, a young newly-wed girl’s hair was cut off with scissors after her in-laws demanded another 50,000 taka in dowry, even after receiving one lakh taka.
This incident took place in the London expatriate-dominated area of Jagannathpur.
The victim's poor mother filed a written complaint with Jagannathpur Police Station on May 27, accusing her daughter’s husband, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and one other individual. The police registered the case as a formal complaint on May 4.
The accused are: Rumon Mia (20), the victim's husband from Sonatola village, Pailegaw Union, Jagannathpur; Rumy Begum (37), also known as Doya Begum, the mother-in-law; Lokman (19), the brother-in-law; and Zakir Hossain (32), from the same village.
According to the complaint and police records, the 17-year-old girl, who is from Kadtamali village in Pailegaw Union, was married with the family's consent to Rumon Mia, the son of the late Sujan Mia from Sonatola village. After the marriage, the girl faced continuous mental torture, and her mother was forced to provide the first dowry of one lakh taka to Rumon and his family.
On April 26, Rumon and his family members demanded another 50,000 taka in dowry from the girl’s mother. When the girl refused to provide the additional money, the husband, along with his family members, physically tortured her and then cut off her hair with scissors.
On Sunday, the police arrested one of the accused and presented him before the court.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence, even after substantial payments have been made, leading to severe physical and emotional abuse.
