The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has transferred its first secretary (taxes, legal, and enforcement) Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal to the Taxes Zone, Bogura.

His transfer order comes only days after he was accused of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk1,000 crore.

A letter signed by Md Shahiduzzaman, first secretary of the Tax Administration Department of the NBR, made the disclosure on Sunday.

According to the letter, Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal has been transferred to Inspector Range-1 of the Bogura Tax Region while Md Moniruzzaman, the additional tax commissioner, has been appointed in his position.

Earlier on Thursday, a Dhaka court ordered the freezing of Tk6.96 crore in 87 bank accounts linked to Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal, his wife, and 14 relatives. Additionally, Tk2.55 crore held in 15 savings certificates in the names of Faisal and six others have also been frozen.

The court has also ordered the seizure of immovable assets in the names of Faisal’s wife Afsana and three others.

ACC Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol stated that NBR first secretary Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal amassed substantial wealth through bribery and corruption. The ACC is currently probing the matter.

The commission has discovered that the NBR official accumulated illegal assets worth Tk1,000 crore. An ACC investigation team first uncovered his movable and immovable properties, including a flat, a residential plot in Dhaka, and savings certificates worth Tk16 crore.

In a written application, the commission informed the court that Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal misused his power to transact bribes and opened over 700 bank accounts in his and his relatives' names to conceal the sources of his income through corruption.

According to the order, authorities were ordered to freeze Tk6.96 crore in 87 bank accounts of 14 individuals, including Faisal, and Tk2.55 crore in 15 savings accounts of seven individuals.

The court also ordered to seize immovable assets registered under four people, including Faisal's wife.

The seized properties include 0.0285 acres of land worth Tk75 lakh in Bhatara of the capital, four plots in Purbachal, a flat worth Tk1 crore in Siddheshwari, Dhaka and 10 acres of land worth Tk4.5 crore in Khilgaon.

In addition, former NBR member Matiur Rahman and his family came under discussion following a recent incident involving a goat, leading to the suspension of their bank accounts.
