Mitford murder: Another arrested, case to be transferred to Speedy Trial Tribunal

Police have arrested another individual named Md Titon Gazi in connection with the brutal killing of scrap trader Sohag near Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.

With this, five have been arrested in the case so far.

Among them, police arrested Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, Tarek Rahman Robin, 22, while Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Alamgir, 28, and Monir, 32.

Meanwhile, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said the murder case filed over the killing will be transferred to the speedy trial tribunal.

"Five people involved in this incident have already been arrested. Police have started the investigation with utmost priority," he wrote in a post from his verified Facebook page this morning (12 July).

"The government is determined to ensure a swift trial of the horrific murder in Mitford," the adviser said.

He said arrangements will be made for trial in the shortest possible time under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002.

The murder incident occurred around 6pm on 9 July when Sohag was beaten to death with bricks and stones in the premises of Mitford Hospital.

Shocking footage of the attack, showing continued brutality on his body even after death, went viral on social media, sparking public outrage.

The two accused - Mohin, named as the prime suspect, and Robin were placed on different durations of remand following a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Judge Jewel Rana on 10 July.
