Miscreants have carried out a hellish rampage to foil the warm cloth distribution programme of Daudpur union parishad chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir on Tuesday for supporting Shahjahan Bhuiyan, an independent candidate in Rupganj of Narayanganj.

Local activists of the Jubo League and Chhatra League started gathering in front of the gate of the Daudpur Union Parishad on Tuesday to foil the blanket distribution programme.

The attackers blocked UP chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir inside the council, and at least 20 people were injured in the attack. The rampage took place under the leadership of Mizanur Rahman, the brother of controversial businessman Rafiqul Islam, sources claimed.

Rangdhanu Group Chairman Rafiqul Islam supported Golam Dastagir Gazi, who lost his ministership in the the 12th parliamentary election.

Daudpur union parishad chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir Master and his followers worked for Shahjahan Bhuiyan, a rival candidate of Gazi.

UP Chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir Master organised blanket distribution at Daudpur Union Parishad premises on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 1.30 pm, activists of the Rongdhanu Group’s Rafiq and Gazi, armed with sticks and sharp weapons, attacked the Union Parishad. The attackers broke the main gate of the Union Parishad, entered, and vandalized chairs and tables. At that time, three motorcycles were set on fire. The attackers also set fire to a Harrier car used by UP chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir.

Nurul Islam Jahangir's master and his people were blocked inside the Union Parishad office. The attackers vandalised the chairs and tables in the field. They entered the council room and were ransacked.

A number of cocktail explosions and shootings also took place. At this time, panic spread throughout the area. The businessmen ran away after closing the nearby shops.

During the attack, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Golam Mostafa Russell and Rupganj officer-in-charge Pradip Chandra Saha didn’t respond to the call from the locals.

Later, Narayanganj’s assistant superintendent of police sent the police to help bring the situation under control, according to local journalists.

The members of law and order forces rescued Chairman Nurul Islam Jahangir Master from the blocked situation. Besides, Purbachal fire service personnel came and extinguished the car fire. By then, however, the car was burned to ashes.

Regarding the attack, Rupganj OC Pradip Chandra Saha said that after receiving the news of the clash, members of police and law enforcement forces reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

“At present, the situation is normal. Law enforcement personnel have been deployed at the scene. Action will be taken in consultation with higher authorities and as per the investigation,” he said.
