A man has been arrested in Narayanganj for allegedly posing as the district’s Superintendent of Police (SP) and demanding Tk 2 lakh from the president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA). The suspect, Md. Din Islam, 35, was detained by the District Detective Branch (DB) from the Araihazar area at around 3:30 am on Friday.

Police said that on 10 November, a WhatsApp account named “SP Narayanganj,” using the SP’s photo, contacted BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem and demanded the money, providing a Dutch-Bangla Bank account for the transfer. Finding the request suspicious, Hatem alerted the real SP.

Acting on the complaint, the SP directed the District Detective Branch to investigate. Under the supervision of Additional SP Ibrahim Hossain, a team led by Inspector Mahbub Hossain and SI Shariful Islam tracked the suspect using digital surveillance and carried out the arrest.

Additional SP (Crime & Operations) Tarek Al-Mehdi said the accused and his associates have been using photos and identities of government officials to defraud businesspeople across different districts. A case has been filed at Sadar Model Police Station on charges of fraud and extortion, and efforts are underway to apprehend others involved.
