LPG sales booming amid unrest

Staff Correspondent

Sales of LPG (liquified petroleum gas) have been booming as consumers of prepaid and smart prepaid piped gas services are facing obstacles in recharging their balances amid a prolonged unrest across the country.

According to sources within the LPG operators, following chaotic situations centering the student movement, initially the LPG sales were decreased as there was trouble in transporting the gas.

But after the enforcement of curfew and snapping of internet networks across the country, piped gas consumers, who used prepaid and smart cards, failed to recharge their cards.

As a result, many piped gas consumers started using LPGs as alternative fuels for their cooking stoves.

This has pushed up the demand for LPGs across the country and ensured huge sales, said a top official of a leading LPG operating company.

The use of LPG for household cooking has been growing fast in the country.

Currently the country consumes around 1.50 million metric tonnes of LPG annually, in a leap from around 650,000 metric tonnes during 2017.

The LPG market in Bangladesh started growing significantly after a government decision to suspend new piped-gas connections for household consumers in 2009.

More than 20 LPG companies are operating in the country and Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) adjusts the price every month.
