Land grabbing against pro-AL headteacher in Gangachhara alleged
Md. Lavlu Sheikh back from Gangachhara
A headteacher, widely known for his affiliation with the Awami League, has been accused of attempting to forcibly grab inherited family property, according to a written complaint filed by a grieving family.
It is alleged that Md. Alamgir Hossain, Headteacher of Baraibari High School in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur district, has been trying to illegally occupy a family-owned pond. The accusations were brought forward by the wife and three daughters of the late businessman Md. Wazed Ali, former owner of Messrs. Papri Filling Station.
According to the complaint, following Wazed Ali's death on June 14, 2025, Headteacher Alamgir Hossain began illegally dredging and filling the pond—adjacent to the east side of the school premises—with sand, in an effort to seize the land. When Wazed Ali’s bereaved wife and daughters protested, they were met with resistance.
Subsequently, the family filed a formal complaint to UNO. Following an inspection of legal documents from both parties, the UNO reportedly ordered a halt to the landfilling activity and, based on the records, found the headteacher to be at fault, according to the complainants.
Despite this, allegations persist that Alamgir Hossain has continued the encroachment effort behind the scenes by fabricating false documents and attempting to harass the victimized family. Locals and the victim's family claim the pond in question has long been the inherited property of Wazed Ali’s father and was never legally transferred to the school. Wazed Ali had also used the pond for his business purposes for many years.
Community members assert that the headteacher is exploiting the school's name for his personal gain under the guise of institutional development. Some allege that this is not the first instance of misconduct: he was recently criticized for allegedly paying a local Awami League leader to be appointed as chairman of the school’s managing committee. That incident sparked public protests from local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists as well.
The bereaved family stated, “We were in deep mourning after losing the only male guardian of our family. Attempting to seize our ancestral property during such a vulnerable time is utterly inhumane. We will pursue legal action against the accused.”
Despite attempts to reach Md. Alamgir Hossain for comment, he was unavailable. After the news was reported in several media outlets, he published a so-called protest statement in a local newspaper, which locals and the victim’s family claim was merely an attempt to whitewash his actions.
