Jugantor journalist attacked in Tarail

Kishoreganj Correspondent

Mukramin Khan Swadhin, a correspondent of the Bengali daily  Jugantor, was attacked while gathering news on an alleged land-grabbing incident in Sarrang village under the Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj. His motorcycle was vandalized, and the attackers made away with his mobile phone, camera, and cash.

The brutal attack took place around 9:00am on Sunday in Sarrang village of Tarail upazila. The injured journalist was admitted to Tarail Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.

Sources said that the incident occurred around 8:00am when locals, including Rahis Mia (50), son of deceased Khalek Mia, along with Majnu Mia, Tarin, Akter, Tasmin Akter, Roni, Mia Sagar, Rahat Mia, and Jesmin Akter (35), launched the attack. They had allegedly occupied government land and were attempting to grab a private plot. When confronted and protested against, they reportedly carried out the assault.

It was further reported that the altercation began over objections to a cowshed being built on a government road, which had been obstructing public movement for quite some time.

Swadhin was reportedly taking his child to school, seated in front of his motorcycle, when the attackers ambushed him from behind. During the attack, his mobile phone and camera were forcibly taken, and he was hacked with a local weapon (chapati), causing severe injuries to his head and left hand, including the dismemberment of a finger.

His motorcycle was also damaged in the attack.

Tarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Sabbir Ahmed said, “I have instructed him to file a formal complaint. Legal action will be taken once we receive it.”
