The students of Jahangirnagar University on Friday blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway to press three-point demands including immediate release of Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman Shams.

Over a hundred students brought out a procession at 3:00pm from the Murad Chattar area of the university. After parading different streets, they blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway in front of the university's main gate for half an hour.

They demanded to press home three-point including immediate release of Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman Shams, withdrawal of Digital Security Act (DSA) case against Shams and scrap of DSA.

During the protest, Archaeology department student Sudeepto Dey said, "We are not representing any organization, we are protesting because Shams is our senior brother who upholds the scenario as a journalist. But doing his job, he falls into untold suffering."

English department student Alif Mahmud said, "The students of Jahangirnagar University know how to free Shams. We will continue our agitation till his unconditional release. What Shams has written about the day laborers is the thoughts of millions of people of this country. The politics of strangling him should be stopped if he tells the truth."

"This country will see another mass uprising if it dares to clamp down on the Digital Security Act. Shams should be released unconditionally and returned to his mother immediately, otherwise the sparks of this movement in Jahangirnagar will spread across the country," he added.

JU proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, "The students lifted their blockade considering the sufferings of people due to heavy traffic jams."
