JnU campus turns tumultuous following suicide of student

JnU Correspondent

Jagannath University (JnU) has become agitated by the students' anger over the suicide of Fairuz Abontika, a law student at Jagannath University (JnU).

In protest of this incident, the students protested at the university yesterday night. At that time, they made other demands, including filing a case against those involved in the incident on behalf of the university administration.

The demands of the students are that a fair and impartial investigation of the murder should be ensured, the accused Amman Siddiqui and Assistant Proctor Deen Islam should be immediately arrested, an urgent syndicate should be called, and the accused should be expelled permanently. The victim's family should be given maximum security, and the university administration should be sued as a plaintiff. And the sexual harassment cell of the university should be implemented. Besides, they also announced to surround the administrative building at 11 a.m. on Monday (March 18) if the demands are not met within 24 hours.

Professor Dr. Zakir Hossain, president of the teachers' association, has been made as the convener of the investigation committee.

The other members are- Professor Dr. Abul Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. SM Masum Billah, Dean of the Faculty of Law; and Dr. Jhumur Ahmed, Chairman of the Department of Music.

Advocate Ranjan Kumar Das, deputy registrar of the law branch as the member secretary.

Besides, the university administration has ordered the immediate arrest of the accused student, Amman. And the death of this student of the Law Department, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim, and Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, expressed deep grief and condolences.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim said that action will be taken against all those involved in the suicide of Fairuz Abontika. We cannot do this without going outside the law and investigating. The maximum punishment will be ensured according to the law I have in hand. He also said that the investigation report will be available within the next 7 working days. He said the university operates according to a law. The accused assistant proctor has been temporarily suspended as per university rules. He will be permanently expelled pending an investigation. He said these things while appearing on campus on the day and night of the incident.

JnU Proctor Professor Dr. Jahangir Hossain said, i am inquiring as to why it was not acted upon after filing the complaint. And as far as I know, he did not come to the proctor's office after filing the complaint. Asked what she said in the complaint, she said that Amman and his friends teased her on campus at various times and that she was being bullied. He complained, seeking redress in this regard.

In this regard, the former proctor of the university. Mustafa Kamal said that she filed a complaint in November. When he was called to the office in this regard, he did not communicate. So no further action was taken later.

Tahmina Shabnam, the mother of Abontika, who committed suicide, complained and told the reporters that despite repeated complaints to the university, they did not get any solution to the harassment. That is why the girl committed suicide. My daughter was forced to commit suicide. He further complained, and I have contacted the department chairman and proctor to resolve the issue. So that my daughter could finish her studies well, that did not happen anymore. I lost my daughter because of them, and I want justice for them.

In this regard, the chairman of the law department, Professor Dr. Sarkar Ali Akkas, said Abontika wrote a complaint to me three months ago. I sent a message to the proctor to take strict action in this regard. Since the complaint first went to the proctor's office and I knew they were trying to resolve the matter, I did not inquire about it. I spoke to Abontika two days ago. He told me everything is fine; there is no problem.

Meanwhile, since the incident, the accused student, Amman Siddiqui, has switched off his phone and is hiding. Amman Siddiqui made a post from his personal Facebook ID around 2 p.m. on Friday. There, he wrote that two years ago, Abontika herself opened a fake account on Facebook and wrote false, slanderous words against her classmates. Later, if he himself admitted the matter, he was also given a show cause notice from the proctor's office. Then her father came on behalf of Abontika's family and promised that his daughter would not do any such thing in the future.

Why he committed suicide two years later, I don't know. I have had no contact with him for two years. Amman attached a copy of the GD, show cause notice, undertaking, and screenshots of some Messenger messages in this regard.
