Intensifying cooperative movement for women's leadership, empowerment urged

The representatives of government and non-governmental organisations have called for strengthening the cooperative movement to flourish women's leadership and empowerment in the country.

They made the call while speaking at the inaugural function of Good Neighbours Bangladesh (GNB) Cooperative Convrntion-2022 held at the auditorium of Department of Cooperatives on Wednesday.

The GNB organised the convention with the slogan of “Songothoner Shokti Niye Nari, Somobaye Jukto Hoye Sokkhomota Gori,” with is country director M Mainuddin Moinul in the chair.

Registrar and Director General of the Department of Cooperatives Tarun Kanti Shikder, Deputy Registrar Noor-E-Jannat, Dhaka district cooperative officer Md Shihab Uddin, President of Christian Cooperative Credit Union Limited Ponkaj Gilbart Costa, chairperson of Baridhara Mohila Cooperative Society Aklima Begum, Learning Manager of BRAC Rakibun Nahar, GNB’s Most. Afsana Khanom, Rana Pandey and Akhil Barai, among others, addressed in the convention.

Addressing the function, the speakers put emphasis on the roles of cooperatives in developing the country and women’s empowerment saying that overall development of a nation is not possible without participation and development of women.

Thus, they informed that the cooperative societies run by the GNB are working for employment generation of women and eradication of poverty. The activities would be intensified in the coming days, they hoped.

The convention was informed that in assistance with the GNB, a total of 18 cooperative societies are working in 12 districts in the country. The total members of the cooperative societies now stood at 22,169.

The convention was held aiming at extending cooperation for women empowerment, flourishment of their leadership, gaining independence, and participation in income generating works and encouraging them to deposit money.

The speakers urged the members of cooperative societies to continue their efforts to achieve the goals.

Three cooperative societies were given awards from the convention in recognition to their performance. The representatives of the cooperative societies were provided certificates and prize money.

Besides, a seven-member National Committee was formed comprising members of the cooperative societies. The committee members would provide necessary suggestions in developing the cooperative societies.
