India bans Islamic group PFI under anti-terror law

International Desk

India today banned Popular Front of India (PFI), declaring the Islamic outfit and all its associates, affiliates, and fronts as illegal for five years under stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The PFI makes it to the list of 42 banned terror groups under Section 35 of the UAPA, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

The ban came a day after over 270 people linked to PFI were detained or arrested in a series of raids across seven states of India for alleged terror funding.

The action was taken following inputs of possible disturbance to public order, home ministry officials said.

Last Thursday, a multi-agency nationwide operation in 15 states spearheaded by the anti-terror body National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other law enforcement agencies had led to the arrest of over 100 PFI workers, including the outfit's chairman O M A Sala, in connection with alleged terrorist activities.

The searches, according to PTI, were part of a crackdown against those allegedly involved in terror funding, organising training camps and radicalising people to join banned organizations.

PFI was created in 2007 through the merger of three Muslim organisations in southern India, the National Democratic Front in Kerala, the Karnataka Forum for Dignity, and the Manitha Neethi Pasarai in Tamil Nadu.
