Heat wave paralyses normal life in Mymensingh

Arshad Ahmed Asad, Gafargaon Mymensingh

Light of fire in the air of Gafargaon, Mymensingh.  Apart from humans, animals are breathing everywhere.  In this situation, the longing of the people around them is 'Allah megh de pani de chhaya de'.  The pitch on the road seems to have started to melt.  The day is being spent in the burning of the diagonal sun.  Instability is increasing in public life.  Even at night there is no relief.

On the one hand, the month of Ramadan, on the other hand, the suffering seems to be more in the hostile weather of nature.  Temperature is rising in Gafargaon of Mymensingh.  People, green nature, crops, potatoes, litchi and vegetable fields are burning at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius.  Even the leaves of the tree do not move in rough weather.

The morning sun is rising with the light of fire.  The weather is getting hot by ten o'clock.  The heat increases as time goes on.  The people living in tin sheds are the most vulnerable.  The heat seems to be dripping down the tin.  As a result, staying at home has become a liability.  Due to the lockdown, sidewalk traders return home, but there is no relief.  The water tanks on the roofs of big buildings are also turning into boiling water.

People and animals are breathing in the scorching heat.  Intense heat is being felt due to the presence of water vapor in some places.  Excessive presence of water vapor is 5 degrees Celsius higher than the recorded temperature.  The harsh sun has raised the temperature a few more times.  Working people suffer the most because of the heat.  They are having a lot of trouble working this summer.

Many farmers in Gafargaon of Mymensingh can be seen walking around, many farmers are busy threshing paddy, but their work is very difficult due to the extreme temperature.  Around Hossainpur Bazar, it is seen that some of the rickshaw pullers are sleeping on the rickshaws and some are sitting next to them.  In the intense heat, people of all classes and professions are getting tired.  Sweating from the body.  Heat-stricken pedestrians have also been seen using umbrellas to protect themselves from the scorching heat, but they are also sweating in the scorching sun.

Meanwhile, people from children to old people are getting sick due to extreme heat.

Many children have been indulging in mischief for a long time in the village ponds and ditches to seek peace.  Many times old people are also joining them.

In Mymensingh, the residents have been under house arrest for the last 4 days due to the hot weather.  At noon, the number of people in shops and markets has decreased alarmingly.  Office-courts, especially tender-hearted children, are gasping for breath.  The roads are also very deserted.  However, the cool wind is not blowing from the rivers flowing over the district including the Brahmaputra river.  The hot winds have started blowing in the cities as well as in the villages of the districts and upazilas which are almost unbearable.

Meanwhile, the incidence of mosquitoes is increasing as the temperature rises.  Mosquito swarms have been swarming since the evening.  Residents of the district are restless due to mosquito infestation.  Mosquito infestation increases so much at night that the residents have to sit inside the mosquito nets to eat.

Mymensingh Sadar, Gafargaon, Fulbaria, Tarakanda, Trishal, Bhaluka, Nandail, Ishwarganj, Gooripur, Haluaghat, Tarakanda, Dhobaura and Muktagachha upazilas of the district have seen the same pattern of heat and cold.

Doctors said that there is more discomfort in the heat due to high humidity in the air.  Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Assistant Professor (Children) said.  Mushfiqur Rahman said, drinking water, sherbet, fruit juice, cucumber, watermelon, coconut, palm shell and other drinks will reduce the discomfort.  In the case of infants, he suggests more water during the day and frequent breastfeeding for a little more infants.  The doctor also advised not to go out in the sun except for emergency work.

In this regard, SS Farhana Hossain, Regional Agricultural Information and Communication Specialist, Mymensingh Agricultural Information Service Office, said that vegetables can be damaged if the heat is not reduced.  However, there is no possibility of damage if irrigation can be given.
