The High Court on Monday stayed an order by BUET authorities to cancel the residency of the university’s student and BCL leader Imtiaz Hossain Rahim, effectively allowing Imtiaz to resume living at his residential hall.

The bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol issued a ruling in this regard in response to a writ petitioned by Imtiaz challenging the cancellation of his residency permit at BUET.

Imtiaz has told reporters he would resume living on the campus after the Eid vacation. Previously, Imtiaz also secured a High Court ruling in his favour in a writ challenging BUET’s ban on student politics.

Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque moved in favour of Imtiaz on Monday’s hearing over the reinstatement of his residential status at BUET.

The lawyer later told reporters that BUET authorities cancelled Imtiaz’s residency because of presence of BCL leaders on campus on the midnight of 28 March. However, the authorities failed to specify what Imtiaz’s crime was during the incident.

Furthermore, as per the common norms of justice, Imtiaz should had been allowed to explain his position through the issuance of a show cause notice by BUET officials.

BUET has decided to conduct a thorough probe into the incident of 28 March. The High Court has not proscribed investigations against Imtiaz over the incident. In the meantime, he can stay at his residential hall without any obstructions.

However, the court did raise concerns over potential tensions at BUET in the event of Imtiaz’s return to his residential hall. Advocate Manjurul has assured the justices that no untoward incident would result from the return of his client to BUET hall, the lawyer added.
