Growing demand for female workers in Srinagar potato farming

Khan Suzon, Srinagar (Munshiganj)

Local potato farmers of Srinagar Upazila, Munshiganj, are taking extra care of their potato crops.

A large number of agricultural workers are required for this maintenance, leading to an increased demand for female laborers.Hoping for a good harvest, farmers are engaged in irrigation, pesticide spraying, and weed removal in their fields. Alongside male workers, women are also playing a significant role in these tasks. However, wage disparity persists, as female workers earn 350–400 BDT per day, whereas male workers receive 500–600 BDT per day.

Potato farming is widespread in Birtara, Tantar, Atpara, and Kukuutia Unions, where farmers are giving extra attention to their crops. Activities such as irrigation, weed removal, and pesticide spraying are being carried out to ensure healthy growth.

Local farmers stated that heavy rainfall at the start of the potato-growing season had damaged the crops significantly. Many farmers had to replant potatoes at additional costs. Now, to achieve the desired yield, they are ensuring intensive field care. Since irrigation is costly due to insufficient rainfall, farmers are employing female workers for weed removal, paying 400 BDT per day along with two meals, while male workers are paid 600 BDT. As a result, the demand for female laborers has increased.Several female workers in Sufiganj and Tantar mentioned that they had come from different northern districts to work in this region. They are residing in rental accommodations in Rusdi, Purarbarg, and Nawpara Bazar areas.

According to the local agriculture office, around 2,300 hectares of land in the upazila are being used for potato cultivation, while the target for rice cultivation is 10,000 hectares.

Mohsina Jahan Torun, the local agriculture officer, confirmed that women play a vital role in potato farming. Their contribution is helping improve their financial condition. Favorable weather conditions have led to normal crop growth. This year, the target for potato cultivation in Srinagar is 1,900 hectares, with farmers primarily growing Diamond and Asterix varieties. The agricultural department is providing continuous guidance to support them.
