Ghatail Islamic Bank branch opens: Role of Islamic Bank in restructuring Bangladesh's economy vital: BB Governor Mansur

Rumi Akter Poly, Tangail

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur said that to restructure the economy of Bangladesh, the banking sector must be restructured and to restructure this banking sector, Islamic Bank is definitely needed. Because it is the largest private sector bank. Bangladesh's economy cannot be taken forward without Islamic Bank.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 400th branch of Islami Bank in Ghatail, Tangail on Saturday (December 28).

He said that almost a quarter of the country's population is associated with Islamic Bank. The inauguration of the 400th branch is a big achievement for this bank. Islami Bank has come to a much better position than it was five months ago. The bank has already been able to collect new deposits of Tk 7,000 crore. Then this bank will be able to invest up to Tk 25,000 crore a year, which is no small matter. People have confidence in Islami Bank. So within a short time, Islami Bank has turned around and is moving forward. This bank will not have to look back.

He also said, Islami Bank has also played a huge role in collecting remittances. Currently, it is at the top in collecting remittances. Islami Bank is a very big bank. However, we want it to be of international standard. Currently, Islami Bank's assets are 11-12 billion dollars, but 70-80 billion dollars are needed to be of international standard. So I believe that if banks in other countries of the world can do it, then we also have to achieve this potential. I will call on the leaders of Islami Bank to take this as a challenge and make this bank a bank 10 times bigger in size. Only then can it be of international standard.

Obaid Ullah Al Masud, Chairman of the bank, said, Islami Bank's wide network across the country with 400 branches, 265 sub-branches, 2800 agent outlets and more than 3000 ATM/CRMs proves the popularity of this bank. The employees of this bank are working with utmost honesty and sincerity. There are no such honest and capable people under the same roof anywhere.

The function was presided over by the Chairman of the bank, Obaid Ullah Al Masud, and the special guests were - Chairman of the Executive Committee Md. Abdul Jalil, Chairman of the Risk Management Committee Prof. Dr. M Masud Rahman, Chairman of the Audit Committee Md. Abdus Salam and Independent Director Mohammad Khurshid Wahab.

The welcoming speech was delivered by Managing Director Muhammad Munirul Maula and the keynote speech was presented by Member Secretary of the Sharia Supervisory Committee Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdus Samad on welfare-oriented banking. The vote of thanks was given by Additional Managing Director Md. Omar Faruk Khan. Additional Managing Directors Md. Altaf Hussain and Mohammad Jamal Uddin Majumder were present at the time.

Speaking on behalf of the customers at the event were Prof Khandaker Abdur Razzak, Vice President of Tangail Sabalia Adarsh Samaj Kalyan Parishad, Md. Hosni Mobarak Babul, Principal of Aim City Residential School and College, Md. Russell Mia, Proprietor of the Bank's Brahmin Shasan Bazar Agent Outlet, and businessman and educationist Md. Rafiqul Islam.

Senior executives of the bank's head office and officers of various branches, businessmen, well-wishers and local dignitaries were present at the event.
