The funeral of firefighter Md. Swanur Zaman Nayan, who died in hospital after being hit by a truck while on duty in a Secretariat fire accident, was held.

The funeral was held at the premises of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate on Thursday noon.

The funeral was attended by Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.), Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Md. Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, Director General of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, NDC, AFWC, PSC, and various ranks of the ministry and the department.

Before the funeral ceremony, the Home Affairs Adviser paid tribute to the coffin of Shaheed Md. Swanur Zaman Nayan. At this time, a smart team of firefighters provided a guard of honor. Then, a brief biography of the late firefighter was read out on behalf of the Fire Service and Civil Defense. Then, two relatives of the late firefighter gave short speeches. They appealed to everyone to pray for the deceased on behalf of Nayan's family. Then, the funeral prayer and prayers were conducted by Muhaddis Kazi Sharif Ullah, a religious teacher of the Fire Service and Civil Defense.

After the funeral, the Honorable Home Affairs Advisor spoke to the media and answered their various questions. Then, the Fire Service officials started their journey to Atpania village, Mithapukur police station, Rangpur, his village home, with the ambulance carrying Swanur Zaman Nayan. The body of the late Swanur Rahman Nayan will be laid to rest in the soil of his village where he grew up as a child.

It is to be noted that a fire broke out in Building No. 7 of the Secretariat at 01:52 on 26-12-2024. 19 units and 211 officers and employees from 12 fire stations in Dhaka participated in extinguishing the fire in the Secretariat. In the said accident, the fire spread from the 6th to the 9th floor of Building No. 7 of the Secretariat. With the relentless efforts of the officers and employees of the Fire Service and Civil Defense, the fire was brought under control at 08:05 and the fire was completely extinguished at 11:45. The cause and damage of the fire accident can be confirmed subject to investigation.

In this fire accident, Md. Swanur Zaman Nayan, a firefighter of Tejgaon Fire Station of the Fire Service, was seriously injured when he was hit by a speeding truck on the road south of the Secretariat while he was engaged in extinguishing the fire. Immediately after taking him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctor on duty declared him dead (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun).

A case has been filed under the Road Transport Act at Shahbagh Police Station. Four other members of the fire service were injured in the fire, but all the injured are in good condition.
