Farmers busy with cultivating early winter vegetables

Sylhet Bureau

Farmers in Bishwanath upazila in Sylhet district are passing busy time with the cultivation of early winter vegetables. In the croplands, various winter vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, radish, gourd, bean and other vegetables are visible. Farmers benefit by cultivating early winter vegetables. Later, when the supply of winter vegetables increases, the farmers have to sell at a low price.

For this reason, farmers in the upazila are busy cultivating early winter vegetables.

Motin Miah, a vegetable cultivator of the upazila, said, "I have cultivated radish in one bigha of land. I hope that I will be able to grow bumber yield of radish in ten to twelve days and also get a good price of the produces."

Farmer Alam from Munishirgown village said, "I cultivate cauliflower in 3 to 4 bighas of land every year but this year due to financial crisis I have cultivated cauliflower in 2.5 bighas of land. If the price is higher, I will benefit financially."

Upazila Agriculture Officer said, "Some vegetables have already been cultivated in 750 hectares of land in Bishwanath upazila this winter. So far, early vegetable cultivation has been started in 250 hectares of land.

The farmers who have grown vegetables in advance are benefiting. As the supply of vegetables is now less in the market, the farmers of the upazila are getting a better price of their vegetables." The farmers of the upazila are happy as they can take their produces outside of the upazila because there is no transport crisis, the DAE official added.
