Elected parliament can establish democracy: Fakhrul
Thakurgaon Correspondent
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said a parliament consisting of elected representatives based on the people's opinions can be the only institution to establish democracy.
"The only way to overcome corruption and fascism is to establish democracy and the only way to protect democracy is fair elections," he told reporters after distributing winter clothes among 2,000 people under his own initiative at a programme at Thakurgaon Press Club.
He said people's rule must be established and the country must be governed by a parliament elected by the people.
"If democracy can be established in all institutions, then this will be the biggest safeguard," the BNP secretary general said.
Replying to a question, Fakhrul said those involved in genocide and terrorism during the Awami League's rule have no room in BNP.
"Our leaders and activists were given clear instructions - those who were involved in mass killings and terrorism will not be allowed into the BNP under any circumstances," he added.
District BNP vice-president Mominul Haque Babu, joint general secretaries Poygam Ali and Ansarul Haque, District BNP treasurer Shariful Islam Sharif, Municipal BNP general secretary Tarek Adnan, District Chhatra Dal president Kayes, and Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal president Sajjad Hossain Saju were present, among others.
