Eight die, another 1,134 hospitalised with dengue fever in Bangladesh

Eight people have died of dengue, while 1,134 more patients been hospitalised with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease throughout Bangladesh in the past 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services, or DGHS, said as many as 409 were admitted to hospital in Dhaka among the new dengue patients until Saturday morning.

In addition, 240 were hospitalised in the Dhaka Division, 41 in the Mymensingh Division, 163 in the Chattogram Division, 110 in the Khulna Division, 33 in the Rajshahi Division, five in the Rangpur Division, two in the Sylhet Division, and 131 in the Barishal Division.

With the new counts, the number of hospitalised dengue patients has reached 71,056 this year. A total of 350 people died among them.

As many as 4,433 patients are currently undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country. They include 2,013 in the capital and 2,420 outside Dhaka.

The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. The highest 1,705 people also died of the disease that year.
