Education minister to file appeal against HC order on school closure

Staff Correspondent

Hours after the High Court (HC) order on keeping schools and madrasas closed till May 2 amid the heat wave, Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel said that he would file an appeal petition seeking withdrawal of the directive.

“I will move to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court directive on closure of the educational institutions,” said the education minister in an instant reaction while talking to reporters after attending a programme held in Agargaon area of Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

The trend of keeping the country’s educational institutions closed is increasing unnecessarily in response to any incident, said the education minister, claiming him as a responsible person constitutionally to take such decision.

Earlier in the day, the HC directed the authorities concerned to keep primary and secondary schools, and madrasas closed until Thursday due to the ongoing heatwave sweeping across the country.

The HC bench comprising Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat came up with the order in a suo moto (voluntary) rule.

Extreme heatwave is sweeping over the country while the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday issued countrywide third phase heat wave alert for the next 72hours.
