EC postpones polls in 3 upazilas in Bandarban due to ongoing joint drive

Staff Correspondent

The Election Commission (EC) has postponed election in three upazilas of Bandarban due to the ongoing joint drive to eliminate the Kuki Chin National Front, an armed insurgent group from the region.

A joint drive to eliminate Kuki Chin armed insurgents is underway in Thanchi, Ruma and Rowangchari upazilas and thus the commission has postponed the local body election in the area, EC Additional Secretary Jahangir Alam said on Tuesday.

While talking to the reporters at the EC office in Dhaka, Alam said the commission took the decision during an inter-ministerial meeting on the six phases of local body election.

The election in the three upazilas will be held in a convenient time later, added the EC official.

Four election commissioners, concerned officials of Public Security Division, Public Administration, Police, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and high officials from different ministries attended the meeting.

Bangladeshi security forces and law enforcement agencies launched a pincer operation on 6 April against the armed hill group KNF in Bandarban following a string of bank robberies, kidnapping and attacks on security checkposts in the district.

The operation began in line with the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and it will continue till the KNF members are eliminated in the district.
