DSCC arranges Shakrain festival in old Dhaka

Staff Correspondent

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Sunday arranged Shakrain festival in its 75 wards, marking the last of the Bangali month of Poush, also known as Poush Sankranthi.

A total of 15,000 kites were distributed through ward councilors. As part of the celebration of the traditional festival, an event was arranged at Dhupkhola math (ground) where DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh attended.

Addressing the programme, the Mayor said, "We are very happy today. This Shakrain festival is our oldest festival. We want to spread our ancient traditions among the new generation. As if the young generation holding the tradition of Dhaka -Bengal can take Bangladesh forward by cherishing their traditions in a non-communal spirit against all communal forces.”

Since Sunday morning, a kite-flying frenzy has been observed on the rooftops of almost all buildings in Old Dhaka. Dhakaities of all ages, regardless of sexes, participated in the festival. In the evening, at the kite flying festival, music in loudspeakers was heard from every building, and delicious food was cooked.

Awlad Hossain, Member of Parliament of Dhaka-4, Moshiur Rahman Molla Sajal Member of Parliament of Dhaka-5, Humayun Kabir, General Secretary of Dhaka South Awami League, among others, were present at the event.

Mentionable, the DSCC has been celebrating the festival since 2021.
