DNCC takes down Lautala Canal grabbers

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched an eviction drive to remove illegal structures from Lautala Canal in the capital’s Bosila area.
The authorities demolished two structures completely and one 10-storey building – 70% of which was on the canal – partially on Friday, DNCC officials said.
The DNCC officials also said that they conducted a similar drive in 2022. The 10-storey building did not exist at that time. It was built due to lax monitoring by the city corporation.
Aside from the eviction, the DNCC conducted a cleanliness drive – with the participation of several hundred volunteers of an organisation – in the canal which is a part of Ramchandrapur Canal.
Attending the programme, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam criticised polluters of the canals saying, “Those who throw waste in canals have waste in their brains.”
He also said, “There will be no tolerance for any illegal structures alongside the city corporation’s canals. We will be removing all encroaching structures, no matter how powerful their owners are.”
The DNCC took a project involving Tk27 crore in 2022 to demarcate the canals but they are yet to complete it. Besides, more projects for re-excavating the canals and planting trees on their banks are needed to revive the water bodies.
