District administration office will be closed soon if demands not met : Kazi Mujibur Rahman

Sohel Kanti Nath, Bandarban

Kazi Mujibur Rahman, Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Citizens' Council, has warned that the district administration office will be closed soon if the demands for extension of the lease period of land covered by the market fund, introduction of bank loans, introduction of land management in the three hill districts like the 61 districts and cancellation of the so-called king's charter are not accepted.

He said these  at a human chain organized by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Citizens' Council in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Tuesday  morning.

At this time, he also said that the Deputy Commissioner of a district is the highest representative of the government. He is the revenue collector along with the land control of the district. He can solve these problems if he wants by discussing with the higher authorities. Although the residents of the three hill districts can go to the 61 districts and purchase land, they cannot come and become land owners in the hill districts. This is like living in one country within another. Which is never desirable in an independent state.

He said, the headmen are appointed by the district administrator and they are paid salaries and allowances with the people's tax money. But these headmen have been extorting 10-20 percent from the general public by holding them hostage in the name of the headman report. He demanded that the headman report be canceled and the extortion in the name of these headman reports be stopped. This leader of the Citizens' Council warned of a tougher movement if these demands are not accepted.

Among others, the leaders and activists of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Citizens' Council, including Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, acting president of Bandarban district of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Citizens' Council, Secretary and member of the Bandarban Hill District Council Md. Nasir Uddin, Vice President Md. Alam, were present at the human chain.

Meanwhile, hundreds of men and women in different areas of the district participated in the human chain holding various banners and placards.
