Disruptions in Eid Joy Amidst Technological Advancements!

The rapid advancements in science, digital technology, and social media have significantly expanded in Bangladesh and across the world. With the progress of science and technology, there have been profound changes in human lifestyles, livelihoods, and daily activities.Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics have further facilitated daily tasks, making human efforts easier and more efficient, while also contributing to economic growth. As the writer Jajabor once said, "Science has given mankind speed but taken away emotions." The evolution of technology has led to a shift from handwritten letters to digital messaging via mobile devices and social media, affecting emotional and social
interactions. This transformation has influenced individual, familial, societal, and religious events, altering
how celebrations and traditions are observed. Social researchers suggest that while technological advancements offer efficiency, they also erode human emotions, sociability, and traditional customs. This is not desirable for a welfare-oriented and humane society. Reflecting on the recently celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, these observations become highly relevant. Since childhood, Eid prayers have been traditionally held in open fields under the sky, except in extreme weather conditions when mosques serve as alternative venues. Previously, Eid fairs were commonly organized, adding vibrancy to the festivities. However, modernity has overshadowed these traditional fairs, leading to their decline. Around 20-25 years ago, Eid prayers were predominantly held in open fields, accompanied by vibrant fairs featuring a
variety of attractive goods. Even during the rainy season, makeshift tents and stalls would be set up around mosques to facilitate Eid shopping. After prayers, children would enthusiastically buy toys, ice creams, and other treats, making Eid a truly festive experience. In contrast, todays children are more engrossed in mobile gaming and online interactions,ব missing out on these traditional joys. Eid symbolizes joy, and this joy is intrinsically linked to economic activities. Eid-ul-Fitr not only marks the end of a holy month but also fosters a spirit of generosity and fraternity. The
month of Ramadan sees a surge in economic activities as people engage in extensive shopping, boosting the national economy. During any festival, economic transactions significantly increase, benefiting all social classes. Regardless of their financial status, people purchase clothing, cosmetics, perfumes, shoes, and various gifts for their loved ones, reviving market dynamics. According to private estimates, about 500 crore BDT is distributed as obligatory charity given by affluent Muslims to the underprivileged. Additionally, wealthy individuals provide from their accumulated wealth, aiding underprivileged communities. The flow of remittances also increases significantly during Eid, as expatriates send money home to support their families. According to Bangladesh Bank, a record 2.94 billion USD in remittances was received in the first 26 days of March this year, marking an 82% increase compared to the previous year. An economist from Dhaka University highlights that this inflow of remittances and urban-to-rural economic transfers during Eid lead to wealth redistribution, stimulating rural and urban markets alike. This year, the stability in essential commodity prices throughout Ramadan provided significant relief to low and middle-income groups. The interim government, led by Dr.
Muhammad Yunus, ensured a stable market by regulating imports, supply chains, and stock management. Consequently, consumers were able to purchase goods at affordable prices, reducing financial stress. Credit goes to Dr. Yunus, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Basir Uddin, and relevant ministries for implementing these effective measures. People expect that similar strategies will be maintained to ensure year-round stability in commodity prices. Eid travel conditions were notably smooth this year across roads, railways, and waterways. Staggered holiday departures, favorable weather, and active road monitoring ensured a hassle-free journey for home-bound travelers. The presence of army personnel in some areas further contributed to traffic discipline. Similarly, train schedules remained consistent, and waterway travelers faced minimal disruptions. The remarkable aspects of this Eid included a comfortable shopping experience, safe travel, and widespread celebrations. Law enforcement agencies played a crucial role in maintaining
peace and security. The Home Adviser, Major General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, conducted surprise visits to various police stations, terminals, and stations, boosting the morale of on-duty law enforcement officers. His efforts, along with active public participation in maintaining security, ensured a peaceful Ramadan. Additionally, the patriotic
army provided constant support in maintaining order at the grassroots level. Apart from a few isolated incidents, law enforcement measures ensured a safe and enjoyable Eid for the nation. The people of Bangladesh aspire to a society built on harmony, unity, and secular values. They reject conflict and seek peace and progress. Bangladeshis cherish laughter, joy, and a spirit of equality, and the ultimate goal should be to build a just and equitable nation. To
achieve this, it is imperative to uphold the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War and independence. During an Eid gathering at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon, Dr. Muhammad Yunus extended his best wishes to dignitaries and citizens, emphasizing the need for sustained peace. He stated, "We must cherish this day every day. We seek a society where people can live freely, without fear or anxiety. We wish for peace in our nation and across the world।Echoing his sentiments, we, too, must commit ourselves to tirelessly working for the welfare and progress of Bangladesh. As responsible global citizens, it is our moral duty to advocate for peace and harmony worldwide. The wirter is a Journalist, General Secretary—Bangladesh Climate Change Fourm.
