Staff Correspondent
A group of CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers on Sunday blocked the main road in front of the BRTA office in Banani, crippling traffic movement along the Uttara–Mohakhali route that caused huge sufferings to the commuters.
The drivers mostly from the city’s outskirts demand that they be allowed to operate across the capital city. Currently, they are not permitted to operate in the capital city.
Contracted, officer in charge of Banani police station Russell Sarwar told UNB that a group of CNG drivers from outside Dhaka gathered in front of the BRTA office and blocked the road at around 12:30 p.m. Vehicular movements from both direction -Uttara to Mohakhali and Mohakhali to Uttara - have been halted since around 12:30. Additional police personnel have been deployed to deal with the situation.
Sources at the Gulshan Traffic division said, incoming vehicles are being diverted through Kakoli–Gulshan-2–Gulshan-1–Amtoli or via Gulshan-1 to Police Plaza to manage the situation.
Outgoing vehicles are also being diverted accordingly, with access to the Elevated Expressway available for outbound traffic.
Traffic from Uttara heading towards Tejgaon and Hatirjheel is also being rerouted through the Expressway, said a Traffic police officer requesting anonymity.
