BSF fires targeting coal smugglers at Bangladesh-India border

The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has fired 10 rounds of bullets targeting coal smugglers along the Bangladesh-India border.

Residents of border villages Kalagao, Jangalbari, Charagaon, and Lalghat in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, confirmed the incident to Jugantor on Wednesday night.

According to locals, about 150 to 200 Bangladeshi nationals illegally crossed the border at Charagaon stream, from border pillar 1195/4-S to 1195/6-S, within the area under the Charagaon BOP of Sunamganj-28 Border Guard Battalion of BGB Sylhet Sector. They entered Indian territory under the pretense of coal collection but were in fact involved in coal smuggling.

During the incident, when a patrol team from the Charagaon BSF Camp of the Shillong BSF Battalion tried to intervene, the smugglers allegedly verbally abused and threw stones at the BSF personnel.

In response, the BSF opened fire in two phases, discharging a total of 10 rounds aimed at the smugglers. However, as the smugglers have since gone into hiding, it remains unclear whether there were any casualties.

Lieutenant Colonel AKM Zakaria Kadir, Commander of Sunamganj-28 Border Guard Battalion of BGB Sylhet Sector, stated that following the May 20 BSF firing incident on Wednesday evening.

A case was filed by BGB on Tuesday night at Tahirpur Police Station against the coal smuggling ring.
