BRUR students want qualified VC from other universities

Hossain Jaman Sohag, BRUR

Rangpur Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) started its journey under the name 'Rangpur University' on 12th October 2008 under the caretaker government headed by Fakhruddin Ahmed.

Later, when the then Awami League government came to power in 2009, the university was renamed "Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur" after the pioneer of Bengali women's awakening, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. For a long and a half century, the university was occupied by pro-Awami League teachers.

Also, according to university sources, five vice-chancellors have come to the university so far. But no one's departure was honorable. After the death of Abu Saeed in the quota reform movement and the fall of the government, the outgoing vice-chancellor resigned in the face of student fire, but the remaining four vice-chancellors resigned in the face of various irregularities and anti-corruption movements.

As a result, none of the former and current students of the university want a vice-chancellor from their university due to the activities of the vice-chancellors and the teachers' involvement with it.Shakil Hasan, a student of Marketing department, said that no teacher of this university was with the students. Abu Said was brutally killed in front of his university. If a teacher had been there, such a tragic incident would not have happened.

Umme Hani Raina, a student of Management Information System department.Ummm I think if a vice-chancellor from our varsity, there is a chance for corruption & collaboration of teaching method is also needed in University... So I don’t want a vice-chancellor from our University.

Najmul Hasan, a student of Finance and Banking Department, said, "We are worried whether the VC from our university will be able to fulfill his proper duties." That's why we want a person to come as VC who is educated, realistic and an ambitious person. He will complete the unfinished works of our university and take the university forward.

Samsul Alam. Associate Professor of the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department said I agree with yours. Still there is lacking in leading from BRUR Rather, It's better to recruit a prominent scholar, specially from University of Dhaka (DU) or any other tecognized higher educational Institute.

In response to the question why the students are so angry that they did not want to appoint a VC of their university, Professor Umar Farooq, the head of the Accounting and Information System(AIS) department, said that Everyone has the right to ask. He has the right to express his wishes as he likes. It is a state decision who will be the Vice-Chancellor of a university. We have the freedom to voice our opinions there. As far as I know, there are 21 professors at Begum Rokeya University, but it doesn't sound good to say that none of them are qualified. In some cases, this reveals the university's narrow focus. Another thing is that Begum Rokeya University has not had its own Vice-Chancellor since its birth. Everyone was a guest.

We cannot confidently assert that he has successfully fulfilled a significant amount of responsibility. So far, we have not given a chance to any teacher of this university as Vice-Chancellor. So, how can we dismiss them as unqualified without at least giving someone a chance? Anyway, whoever the vice chancellor is, we want a qualified and student-friendly Vice-Chancellor. We want this university to become dynamic by appointing a Vice-Chancellor at the earliest.
