Bangladeshis to be honoured in New York

Bangladeshi expatriates who have showed their excellence in the mainstream politics of the United States (US) will be honoured in New York today local time (early Sunday in Bangladesh).

North America edition of the Bangladesh Pratidin and online portal nypratidin.com will jointly accord a reception titled ‘Bengal Hero’ to them at LaGuardia Plaza Hotel in Queens, says a press release.

Over 27 Bangladeshi nationals elected to counties, city councils and state parliaments from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Michigan, Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Michigan and other states will join the reception.
Organisers said some 37 Bangladeshi-Americans have been elected representatives in different areas of the US. As an emerging community, Bangladeshis have shown excellence in American politics.

Apart from dignitaries from Bangladesh and the US, valiant freedom fighters have been invited to the event as guests. They will hand over the crests to the recipients.

The awardees include Georgia state senator Sheikh Rahman, former President Barack Obama’s adviser Dr Nina Ahmad, New Hampshire state representative Aboul Khan, Melbourne City Mayor Mahbubul Alam, New Jersey councilman Dr Nuran Nabi, New York City councilwoman Shahana Hanif, Melbourne city councilmen Nurul Hasan, Alauddin Patwari, Mansoor Ali Mithu and Rafiqul Islam Jiban, New Jersey councilman-At-Large Md Forid Uddin, Hamtramck City Mayor Pro-tem Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, councilman Nayeem Choudhury, Upper Darby Councilman Sheikh Siddique, New Jersey councilwoman Shepa Uddin, Hudson city board of supervisors Abdus Miah, Alderman Dewan Sarwar and Shershah Mizan, councilwoman Tahsina Ahmed of Heldon City, Democratic Party’ Refugio County unit chair Nihal Rahim, New York State Committee woman Jamilla Uddin, Judicial Delegates Mohammad Sabul Uddin, Nusrat Alam and Jami M Qazi, Democratic Party’s Palm Beach county unit board member Junaid Akhtar, Queens Democratic Party’s district leader Mofazzal Hossain and Morshed Alam, the pioneer of Bangladeshis in the mainstream politics in the US.

Foreign Minister AKM Abul Momen is scheduled to attend the programme as chief guest while Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, US congresswoman Grace Meng and New York state senator Jessica Ramos will be present as special guests.

Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam will deliver the address of welcome.

Among other dignitaries, Senator Sheikh Rahman, former President Barack Obama’s advisor Dr Nina Ahmad, state representative Abul Khan and youth representative Marjia Smrity will share their thoughts on the reception.
Bangladesh Pratidin North America edition’s Executive Editor Lablu Ansar coordinated the event while renowned anchor Asim Saha and Councilwoman Tahsina Ahmed will moderate the session.

Earlier, the leading Bangla newspaper initiated the reception programme for expatriate politicians in association with Bangabandhu Foundation. Foreign Affairs Minister AK Abdul Momen attended the programme at Bellozino hall Jackson Heights.
