Arakan Army's fire at various points on Naf River, two shot, 3 Bangladeshis abducted
Myanmar's armed insurgent group, the Arakan Army, opened fire simultaneously at two separate locations along the Naf River in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
In the incident at Naf River near Shabrang, two fishermen sustained bullet injuries. Meanwhile, three Bangladeshis were abducted from the Leda point of the Naf River.
Local public representatives confirmed that the incidents took place on Monday afternoon at the Naf River along Teknaf's Shabrang border and at the stretch adjacent to Leda.
The injured in the Shabrang border incident are Hedayet Ullah (17) and Md. Hossain (16), both residents of Jaliya Para, Shah Porir Dwip, Teknaf.
Those abducted from the Naf River near Leda are Siddique Hossain (27), Robiul Alam (27), and Mahmud Hossain (30). All three are residents of Lamarpra, Purba Leda, in Teknaf’s Hnila Union.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehshan Uddin said, "Two fishermen who went fishing in the Naf River were shot. When they went to catch fish within the Bangladeshi side of the river on Monday afternoon, members of the Arakan Army opened several rounds of fire at them. Hedayet Ullah (17) and Md. Hossain (16) sustained bullet wounds to their right knee and left leg. The injured are currently under treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Further details are being gathered on the incident."
However, no such injured individuals had arrived at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital until 8 pm on Monday.
Meanwhile, acting chairman of Teknaf’s Hnila Union, Mohammad Ali, confirmed that three persons were abducted from the Naf River near Leda on Monday afternoon.
He stated that the three individuals abducted were not fishermen, though it was not clear why they had entered the Naf River. Locals reported that three men had taken a boat into the river, whereupon members of the Arakan Army, upon spotting them, opened fire. The armed group later chased them down and took them away. He added that local administration has been notified of the matter.
Teknaf UNO Sheikh Ehshan Uddin said, “We’ve also heard about the abduction of three individuals and have informed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).”
Commanding Officer of Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman, said, “We’ve received information about the incident at Leda. However, it’s not yet clear whether the individuals were fishermen or drug traffickers, as significant narcotics consignments have previously been seized in that area. We’re investigating whether they had crossed into Myanmar for drug-related activities. Efforts are underway to bring them back.”
No statement was available from the BGB regarding the two individuals who were shot.
