The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday (July 2) served notices seeking the wealth statements of former president of the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal Matiur Rahman within 21 working days.

The notices were also served on his two wives -- Laila Kaniz Lucky and Shammi Akter Shibly -- and their children seeking details of their assets.

The notices were sent with separate letters from the ACC head office at Segunbagicha in the capital on Tuesday (July 2), said ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen at a press briefing.

She said: "After the preliminary investigation, the ACC firmly believes that Matiur Rahman and his family members have become owners of huge wealth beyond their known sources of income. Notices have been served to submit detailed descriptions of the movable and immovable properties accumulated in the names of him, his wives and children to the commission."

The ACC Secretary said apart from Matiur, the notices were sent to the permanent and present addresses of his first wife Laila Kaniz, her elder son Ahmed Toufiqur Rahman and daughter Farzana Rahman Ipshita, and second wife Shammi Akter Shibly.

Since the three children of Matiur's second wife are minor, they were not asked to submit wealth statements, the ACC sources said.

They were informed that after receiving the notices, they must submit their wealth statements in the designated places. If they fail to submit the details of their wealth within the next 21 working days after receiving the notices or submit false descriptions of their wealth, steps will be taken against them according to Section 5 (2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

Matiur Rahman's name was the talk of the town on social media this Eid-ul-Azha after rumors surfaced that his son had purchased a goat for an Tk 15 lakh.

The exorbitant price of the goat sparked widespread attention, along with a mix of curiosity and controversy.
